Photo of the Month: Leprechaun Spotting

Everyone kept telling me that leprechauns did not exist, but for a long time I had been curious about the little green man.  So last year I was on a mission to find and meet a leprechaun on my trip to the emerald isle. After a week of travelling around Ireland, I was successful in locating a leprechaun on the streets of Dublin.

The leprechaun is known as a trickster fairy.  He is devious, cunning, magical and of course loves to play tricks on people. Thus, my fascination with the little green man.

But don’t tell the Irish leprechauns only appear for St Patrick’s Day or portray them as happy, smiling creatures.  This is far from the truth.  Leprechauns are grumpy, untrustworthy, cunning, devious and tricky.

Leprechauns are wise, bearded old man ranging in height from about six inches to two feet tall. The word leprechaun is believed to be derived from the Irish leath bhrogan, meaning shoemaker. Of course, this was their main occupation and they took great pride in their work making shoes for the inhabitants of the faerie world.

As a humble cobbler, the leprechaun not only made shoes, he also kept pots of gold at the end of a rainbow, on behalf of the Danes who plundered and pillaged Ireland. Many people have tried to capture the leprechaun just to get hold of his riches.  According to Irish legend, if you are lucky enough to snare one of the little green men you can bargain for the treasure.

But remember, he is tricky and deceitful………
