Breakfast at Tiffany’s – What Makes you Happy?

Imagine the sparkling of diamonds and precious stones.  Each blinking for attention.  As you stand in front of the jewellery cases, you marvel at the perfectly set jewels locked safely away under the glass.  This is Tiffany and Co – but it is not New York.

Since 1837, Tiffany and Co has led the way to deliver high class, stylish and exquisite jewellery.  With stores in major cities around the globe, it is Adelaide’s turn to share in the Tiffany love.

Located on North Terrace in the upmarket department store of David Jones, Tiffany & Co opened for business in the city of churches on 19 November 2014.  The opening of the Adelaide store inspired me to pull out one of my favourite movies “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.  In many ways this movie is an inspiration to many people in terms of self-discovery and new experiences.

Holly, played by Audrey Hepburn, is a free spirited young socialite living in New York City.  However, beneath the surface is a woman trying hard to find out who she is and what she really wants in life.   Whenever she felt like the world was getting on top of her she would take a trip to Tiffany and Co.  It was the place she felt most happy and her worries soon disappeared because she believed that nothing bad ever happened at Tiffany’s with its friendly and inviting atmosphere.

I believe this way of thinking is true when we travel.  We all have our own Tiffany’s to visit where we can refocus and re-adjust to the overwhelming world we live in.

Just like Holly, I look for new adventures and purpose when I travel.   The mantra portrayed by Holly in the movie very much relates to why we love to travel.  It is about trying different things that one has never done before.  Travel teaches you about yourself and broadens your life experiences.

While Tiffany’s and Co may not be everyone’s idea of a calming influence, it is a reminder for us to take time out from our busy lives occasionally to reflect on ourselves and the people and places we love.  Are we happy?  Are we doing what truly makes us the best we can be?  And if we are not happy or achieving our purpose, what can we change to get there?

I have come to believe that true success is measured in terms of your own happiness and not wealth or promotion.
